Ok, so the name Athens Boys Choir can be a bit deceiving but you can’t
blame Harvey Katz, a Jewish Transsexual man living in the Deep South, for
having a sense of humor about the whole ordeal. This “choir is a one
man lyrical machine gun with spitfire unapologetic spoken word and hip hop that
transforms even the most skeptical into spoken-word loving, transsexual
embracing, Athens Boys Choir fans.

Katz has been touring as the Athens Boys Choir since 2003, hitting the stage
with such performers as Ani Difranco, Katastrophe, Alix Olson, Michelle Tea,
Leslie and the Ly’s, poets from HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, and more. From
sports bars, to living rooms, to large capacity venues, Athens Boys Choir has
shown a flair for versatility and for breaking barriers within communities with his
heart-on-the-sleeve, accessible spoken-word pieces and irresistibly dance-
inducing hip hop.

As Out Magazine wrote in 2006, “Katz avoids falling into the common spoken-
word trap…and instead uses engaging wordplay, razor-sharp wit, and hip-hop
rhythms.

Being an out Transsexual, Katz’s spoken-word often becomes a platform for
education and activism, but all work and no play makes for one intense
performance, so he lets loose with sarcasm, pop culture references, and a multi-
media twist including videos featuring Barbara Streisand as Yentl and of the
1979 hit “Roller Boogie.

With four CDs already released and a fifth due for a September 2008 release,
Harvey Katz/The Athens Boys Choir has established himself as a force in the
spoken-word/queer/pop culture/homo-hop movement. You choose how it moves
you--and it will move you, that’s a promise.
